Pro Tips to Save on Utilities

Small changes that lower your bills every month — without sacrificing comfort

01

Set your thermostat to 68°F in winter, 78°F in summer

Each degree you adjust saves 1–3% on your heating or cooling bill. A programmable or smart thermostat pays for itself in one season.

02

Unplug devices you're not using

"Phantom load" — electronics on standby — accounts for up to 10% of your electric bill. Unplug chargers, TVs, and gaming consoles when not in use.

03

Wash clothes in cold water

About 90% of the energy used by a washing machine goes to heating water. Switching to cold water saves $60–$75 per year with no impact on cleanliness.

04

Run full loads only

A dishwasher and washing machine use the same energy whether half-full or packed. Waiting for a full load can cut those appliance costs nearly in half.

05

Seal drafts around doors and windows

Weatherstripping costs under $20 at any hardware store and can reduce heating/cooling bills by 15–30%. It takes about 30 minutes to install.

06

Switch to LED bulbs

LEDs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 15–25x longer. Replacing 10 bulbs saves roughly $75/year in electricity.

07

Take shorter showers

Cutting your shower from 10 minutes to 5 can save 15–20 gallons of water per shower. Over a month, that's real money off your water and heating bill.

08

Use ceiling fans instead of AC

A ceiling fan costs about $0.01/hour to run vs. $0.36/hour for central AC. Fans make a room feel 4°F cooler — meaning you can raise the thermostat without feeling it.
